Sailors’ Union of India Assists Seafarer in Recovering Lost Baggage Containing Vital Documents:

Mumbai, 22, November 2024 – In a remarkable display of dedication to the welfare of Indian seafarers, the Sailors’ Union of India (SUI) successfully recovered and returned lost baggage containing essential documents belonging to Mr. Nishant Chachad, a 2nd Officer onboard a vessel managed by TK Ship Management, Mumbai.

The incident occurred at Mumbai airport, where Mr. Chachad inadvertently lost his hand baggage while disembarking after completing his tenure onboard. The bag, which contained crucial documents necessary for his career, was mistakenly shifted to a trolley of a South African passenger who had arrived on the same flight. Upon reaching his destination at a Colaba hotel, the South African passenger discovered an unfamiliar bag among his belongings.

Meanwhile, Mr. Haris, , who was running a business in Colaba, was informed about the misplaced baggage. Upon learning about the issue, he promptly reached out to Mr. R.P. Veettil, the National President of the Sailors’ Union of India, seeking assistance. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Mr. Veettil swiftly took action.

Mr. Veettil contacted Crew branch of TK Ship Management, Mr. Chachad was employed with, and coordinated with their representatives to ensure swift communication. The company provided Mr. Veettil’s contact information to Mr. Chachad, allowing him to narrate the details of his predicament.

After extensive efforts, the misplaced bag was traced back from the South African passenger, who had unknowingly carried off. The timely intervention of the Sailors’ Union of India, the bag and its invaluable contents were safely retrieved and handed back to Mr. Chachad.

Expressing his immense gratitude, Mr. Chachad remarked, “The return of my documents feels like getting my life back. Losing them would have spelled the end of my shipping career. I am deeply thankful to Mr. RP Veettil for his selfless and unwavering support to the Seafarers while on distress is greatly appreciated”

Mr. R.P. Veettil, in his statement, reminded that, all seafarers to exercise caution while traveling to safeguard their belongings and ensure a stress-free journey. He emphasized the Union’s commitment to assisting Indian seafarers in every possible way, reiterating their dedication to the welfare and safety of maritime professionals.
